Evaluation
This project has been one of the most enjoyable projects I have undertaken on this course in this year and the last. I put a lot of time and effort into this project and from it I have taken a lot back. From the feedback I get on other projects it was obvious that I do not spend enough time on research and on documenting my thought processes, and so for this project I wanted to spend a majority of my time just researching into the possibilities of what I could create. This has however caused me to fall behind on my practical work, leaving it as I did until the last couple of weeks to get it done. Finding out only then that some of what I was attempting to create was a bit beyond reach. I still believe this to be one of the most productive projects I have been on thus far. It has helped accelerate my understanding of varying forms of digital media and especially that of installation far greater than any other project to date. In all fairness I would have liked to have kept this project entirely as research, finding it a lot more enjoyable to discover other peoples work than actually building anything myself. Not to say that I didn’t create anything during the course of the last few months, I just preferred to briefly look at how something was created and then found it all too easy to find another interesting project by another artist, somewhere else.
One of the key elements to my project was the Wiki. I wanted to create a resource for myself, and anyone else who so should chose to view it, so that I might have a better and easier managed collection of research for my third year at the college. While the Wiki was a good idea, and I’m very pleased that I stuck with it and built it into an already useful research tool, I do also think that the benefits of keeping my research on my blogger account would have made for a lot faster collation of information. However, I find the quickly editable style of the Wiki and clear layout, along with its automatic linking to other Wiki pages on my site very impressive and I think the Wiki was one of the key components as to why I managed to collect so much more information than I had done in other projects previously.
While my practical work did somewhat take a back seat, a complete switch around from previous projects, I think this approach suited me a lot better and in future projects I simply need to get a clearer picture of what it is I want to create from the beginning without over complicating things.
I am hoping that the time I’ve spent on this project will give me a clear and better understanding of how best I should plan my time in order to maximise my productivity. It’s always recommended that you follow some sort of time table, such as the calendar that I created, but in actual practice I find them near impossible to stick to. Running off on tangents of interest is just a part of how I conduct my work, even if it does through the set dates somewhat.
In any future project that I undertake I will use the Wiki again for my research and again build a more impressive collection of backup work before creating my final product. Although I will be trying my hardest to get my time keeping skills better tuned so that I might give myself enough time to get all my work fully realised and finished.
While this project for me could have gone smoother I do also believe this to be the project I have had most personal success on. Managing to finally get my research skills up to scratch I think it’s just a matter now of getting the right balance.
